ACETYLENE GAS

Acetylene gas, commonly known as ethyne, is a colourless gas and is unstable in its pure form and is therefore handled as a solution i.e. dissolved in acetone. Pure acetylene is odourless however, an odour is present in commercial grades, often described as being similar to “garlic”, due to impurities.

Acetylene gas is manufactured by the process of reacting calcium carbide with water.

Combustion of acetylene with oxygen produces a flame temperature of approx. 3,330 degrees celsius and is the hottest burning common oxy-fuel combination.

Common Uses

– Cutting

-Welding and brazing

-Heating and other industrial applications
