NITROGEN GAS
Nitrogen gas is a colourless odourless non-toxic gas. It is the most abundant gas found in our atmosphere at a concentration of 78%. Nitrogen gas is purified industrially by fractional distillation of liquid air. The only hazards associated with nitrogen gas are those related to the gas being stored at extremely low temperatures, high pressures or the displacement of oxygen causing asphyxiation.
Nitrogen is mostly used as a shielding or purging gas in industrial applications and mixed with carbon dioxide for food preparation and modifying atmospheres for storage. Bulk nitrogen is normally shipped in its liquid form at a temperature of -196 degrees celcius or as a high pressure gas in specialised container skids.
COMMON USES
– Shielding gas (Laser cutting)
– Food preparation and storage
– Pipe purging
– Inerting flammable gas storage
– Wine and beverage dispensing
– Laboratory analysis GC carrier gas
