REFRIGERANT GAS
Refrigerant gases are either pure or a mixture of gases, usually as a fluid that are used in commercial or residential heat pump and refrigeration (cold stores/freezers). This liquid, known as the working fluid, undergoes phase transitions from a liquid to a gas and back again during the refrigeration cycle. Most commonly they are a mixture of fluorocarbons or chlorofluorocarbons. However, due to their ozone depleting properties the chloorfluorocarbons are being phased out in favour of more environmentally friendly mixtures.
The ideal working fluid has favourable thermodynamic properties and is non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-flammable and does not deplete the ozone layer. All of the properties are hard to find in a single mixture so trade-offs have to be made which limits the particular application the mixtures are suitable for.
